Dynamics of boreal duck populations lie in the heart of our research. We use long-term data from populations which have been studied quite intensively. Apart from duck population changes, we have been following brood production, food resources and habitat change. Our main research areas are Evo in Southern Finland, Maaninka in Eastern Finland and Nuuksio in Southern Finland near Helsinki, capital of Finland.
Our aim is to reveal aspects that are affecting, and possibly limiting boreal duck populations. These include habitat quality, food resources, and density dependent processes. One goal is to try tackle the fundamental question: whether migrating ducks are limited in their breeding grounds or winter quarters.
